tutorial #3: how to merge two gifs

so this is also an easy tutorial once you learned the basic giffing (and if you haven’t there a tutorial herexxx) but there are some tricky things we have to consider before starting the actual gif

  • you have to consider the scene you’re gonna gif especially if you want to do a full 500x500 gif cause the weight is going to be, again, you’re main issue here. I’d say choose ten caps max (the less the better) so you can’t pick out a scene were there’s a lot of movements and lot of details unless the movement is contained then you can use this tecnique. but if want to use a “full” scene anyway there’s something you can do about it but we’ll get to that at the end of the tutorial
  • the way you color your gif is going to affect the steps. if you don’t use gradients there’s nothing to worry about but if you do (like me) there are some additional things you have to do but don’t worry I’ll explain

first thing you need to have your gifs cropped and sharpened and VERY IMPORTANT you need to have the same amount of frames/caps on every gif

now if you don’t use gradients for coloring your gifs take a pause I’ll explain how to do it later for you ;)

if you are indeed using gradients you need to do your gifs as you would normally do and save them cause if you don’t once you extend your canvas the gradients will extend to both your gifs and everything will go to hell so you need to color them separately and remember to add a black layer under everything like this (this will prevent any white lines around your gifs)

just save your gifs when you’re done, close them on photoshop and them open the saved ones using file -> import frames to layers…, now it doesn’t matter that the window tells you you can only open video formats and there’s nothing you can click on just type whatever you called your gif (in my case 1.gif) and press ok something like this should pop up

http://i52.tinypic.com/hvv5vb.jpg

just press ok and you’ll have your gif already colored and ready to be merged (obviously do this for both your gifs)

now if you don’t use gradients for coloring this is what you want to do first

go to the gif that should be on top and go to image canvas

http://i51.tinypic.com/2n1e6mc.jpg

you need to expand them in height and since I do my gifs 214px high I just double that and press my anchor to the middle up arrow so that when you’re done your canvas will look like this

http://i53.tinypic.com/nmndwy.jpg

go to the second gif select all frames and then copy frames

http://i52.tinypic.com/2lcy5o1.jpg

return to the expanded one, select all frames and then paste frames… check the paste over selection option and then press ok

http://i55.tinypic.com/2qi1m4n.jpg

now you’ll see the second gif is over the first one, don’t worry just select all frames, select only the second gif layers and drag the picture on the bottom

if you’ve done everything correctly you just have to color your gif if you haven’t done it before or just save it and you’re done!

but if you go to save it and realize is too much you can always resize you double gif, expand your canvas again and put a black layer under everything like this

http://i52.tinypic.com/2b5t0n.jpg

you’ll still have your pretty double gif but the size will be a lot less than before

the tutorial is done and you may think it’s difficult but believe me once you go through it you’ll realise it isn’t, but if you have questions as always leave me a message and I’ll respond as soon as I can <3
