Alright, leggo!

1) Find your pics! I’m using this one ofHugh Dancybc sir pls. I’m just cropping it to the eyes, tho.

2) Color your pics how you wish~ (my coloring tutorial, if you like)

3) When you’re done coloring, we start the fun stuff!
• Have the last layer of coloring selected, (mine is the levels layer), click the half circle button on the bottom to create a new adjustment layer, and click on “solid color”

• just press okay for whatever color comes up (it’s usually black or white)
• click on the solid color layer’s layer mask (the white rectangle) and press ctrl + i to invert the mask (alternatively, you can go to the “masks” bit right above, then click “invert”, just make sure the mask is black, you’ll see why~)

• select an eraser with the softness set to 100
• with the blackened in layer mask still selected, erase over the eyes. they’ll turn the color of your layer (mine is black for now, we’ll fix that!) *It’s okay if you paint over the pupils, but don’t go outside the eyes

• now, change the layer blend mode from “normal” to “color dodge”
• double click the block of color to open the menu to change the color; what i do is move the mouse outside the box, so the eyedropper tool will appear. I pick a color with it, then work from there! The darker the color, the more realistic~

• duplicate the layer > change the color to white (ffffff) and the blend mode to “soft light” > click on the eye beside the original color layer to make it disappear > lower the opacity of the white layer (light eyes like this one are normally 20-40%, darker eyes 50-60)
• click the eye on the other color layer to reveal it again, and lower its opacity down to about 50.
• Now, you need to make a new blank layer (shift + ctrl + n, or layer > new > layer).
• Press shift + f5 (or edit > fill > 50% grey), then set the layer to soft light.
• Select the dodge tool. I’m gonna be honest, idk what the settings mean really? but I go over the eyes a couple of times with it set to midtones at 40, then highlights at 20.

Now, it looks like this!

You can call yourself done there if you want, but i like to do another grey soft light layer, then with the burn tool, i darken in the pupils and the edges of the iris. Then sometimes I make another one, and with the dodge tool, i brighten the whites of the eyes, so i end up with this

then you just resize/sharpen/whatever you normally do to your pictures, and you’re done! I hope I helped!

If you get this message, don’t flip a shit like I did. It’s VERY simply fixed.

This thing here is called a taskbar. When you right click on it, a dialogue box should appear like so.

There is a button called ‘Start Task Manager’ or ‘Show Task Manager’ or something of the like. Click it. It will open another dialogue box that will look like so.

As you can see, I am in the processes tab. There are two processes open called the dynamiclink media server (DLMS for short). Bsically, every time you close photoshop, the DLMS needs time to shut down. A lot of the times it wont for whatever reason. At that point, it becomes unusable because it is not suitable with the newest photoshop opening. Click the process, click end process, and you are done. Back to making gifs.

Tips for finding texture materials

As a follow up ofmy guide on how to make textures, here’s a guide to get to know the main sources I use when looking for texture materials. When you are~~a brave knight~~on a quest to make textures, how do you find what you are looking for?

Go to flickr.com/search, and instead of searching in ‘Everyone’s Uploads’, search in ‘The Commons’.

Key Words
What to look for? Well, you need to think about what kind of textures are popular. Paper textures and landscape textures are always useful, so let’s start with those. Examples of search terms I’ve used in the past:

map
letter
paper
landscape
mountains
lake
forest
trees

Tip 1: Use simple key words. Simple works. Try some for yourself (e.g.clouds, waterfall, fire, city, snow). Perhaps there’s something interesting in the results. If you get a lot of results but still can’t can’t find anything nice, click ‘sort by interesting’ or ‘sort by recent’. Always look beyond the first page, because sometimes the nicest images are hidden on the 8th or 10th page!

Tip 2: zoom in on images, even if the thumbnail doesn’t seem interesting. For instance:

Tip 3: Look at the collection the image comes from.This imageis rather interesting texture material, so perhaps the same gallery has more images of the same kind. As you can see on the right, the image is part of various groups. Click on ‘Carl Curman - Sweden’ and more lovely photographs pop up, for instancethis one. Isn’t it lovely?

Tip 4: Go throughthis jewelof a collection. Contains many landscape pictures of relatively high quality.

This source is a little more tricky, since not all the images are in the Public Domain. However, you can use most images for textures under a creative commons license, as long as you provide credit. I’m just chicken shit so I usually only use public domain images. It’s also more complicated since the collection is ginormous. What to look for?

Front Page
If you look at “Content” you see everything divided in categories. Click on any of these topics to get sucked in by the vast collection of the wikimedia commons!

Key Words
Which key words to use? Think practically. If you want to make paper textures, simply searching for ‘paper’ will leave you with thousands of results. That isn’t all too convenient. Think. What is made of paper? Books. Narrow your search: I chose inferno (as in, Dante’s Inferno) as a search term, because the book is old and most definitely in the public domain. The first item that pops up is ‘Category: Dante’s Infero’. Click on the category. Congratulations, you just found the complete text as well as many images depicting scenes from Dante’s Inferno. I found out this idea wasn’t all that great since it didn’t leave me with many sources for paper textures, but it gives you an insight into my trail of thought when looking for resources. It’s all trial and error, really.

Most of the time I use the same sort of short key words as for flickr commons, except I do tend to go to their category (see below). Again, you have to think about practical terms: paper, rocks,~~scissors,~~ trees, forests, mountains, lakes, fabric, squares, circles, watercolors, ink, etc.

Categories

Like I showed you above, categories are your friend. If you search for ‘Da Vinci’ you’ll get many unrelated results. Scroll down until you’ve reached the bottom of the page, then click on Category: Leonardo Da Vinci. There are many sub-categories here. If you click on the small ‘+’ sign in front of each category, more sub-categories appear. You can also click on the sub-category itself. I usually go through most categories to see if I can find something interesting. Sometimes a category proves to be completely useless. I never said that texture making was a fast paced job!

This would be my journey when finding a texture:

Key word: bookbinding
go to category: bookbinding

There are 43 files in this category, and some of them look quite promising as textures, for instancethis gem.

Another detailed search: circle

go to category: circles > round maps > maps of earth’s hemispheres > old maps of earth’s hemispheres > [click]

I’m pretty new to this source, but this is what I’ve learned:

Alway choose ‘Texts’ in the scroll down menu next to the search bar. Use basic terms to look for books. If you look up something like ‘geometry’ you might get a lot of rubbish: try looking for results with a moving gif on the side. Once you’ve opened the result, look at the ‘possible copyright status’ (most of the time you’re good to go). Go to ‘Read Online’ on the left (underneath the gif of the book).

To get an overview of all pages, use this icon:

This is a tutorial/guide on how to use the font Ademas to create graphics likethese.

Requires intermediate knowledge of photoshop (as the tutorial includes magic wand tool and layer masks). The textures in the first part of this tutorial can be found inthis texture pack, the others are from various packs I made.

I hope you enjoy this tutorial! If you have any questions, feel free to ask me.

First of all,download the font here. Please note that it only works with CAPITAL LETTERS (if you pick a lower case letter, you’ll notice the font doesn’t work).

Pick a neutral background color, then choose your text. Make sure the text isn’t too long, because the font might start looking silly when it’s reduced in size. I chose Sherlock Holmes’ initials, because I can:

Well, that’s rather boring, I want pictures in the letters! Choose a texture that fits the background color and paste it behind the S (make sure your texture is large enough to cover all of the letter’s surface!). As you can see a bit of the texture covers the H too, but this is not a problem as long as you put the picture in the H in a layer on top of the S-picture.

Use the Magic Wand tool to select everything outside the letters. This is easy, because the letters are closed off elements so the outline will be selected automatically:

Then go to the layer with the picture on it and a. delete everything or b. create a layer mask (I recommend the second, but that’s just my preference because you can edit things later on). If you created a layer mask with the selection still running, you’ll need to invert the layer mask (just make sure the picture is inside the letter, not outside of it).

Right, so now you have this:

Do the same for the letter H (with a different picture this time).

Right, so now your base is done, but it’s still kind of boring and the colors don’t quite match, so I added a Linear Gradient Map going from #0e0e18 to #d8ab71, only covering the letters (use the same Magic Wand Tool technique to delete the coloring from the background):

Yay, that looks nice! (I realize the colors clash a bit, but I fixed that later on, when I added more textures and coloring). Now you can add more pictures and textures that do not have to fit within the letters.

My result: (thanks toNina for the precut Sherlock image. I’m lazy, boo!)

You can also create a mosaic of the letters, but that will take a long time and lots of textures/pictures! This is how creating a mosaic with the help of this font works:

Type one black letter on a white background. Choose your first texture or picture and paste it behind the letter. Select the font layer and use the Magic Wand tool to select triangles within the letter that you want the picture to be in. Press the shift key to select more triangles at the same time:

When you’ve selected all the triangles you want to, create a new layer mask on thetexture layerso only those triangles are preserved.

Repeat the process with more textures, filling up the letter layer by layer. You can also leave out some of the triangles, it’s up to you. I came up with this:

Now you can paste it on a graphic as an extra element, or add more colors and background textures for a neat typography experiment. That’s all, basically! I hope this guide was useful, and again, feel free to ask questions if anything isn’t clear! Good luck!

a tiny tutorial: how to get text/effects/textures on gifs to go to same place

that title is phrased really badly. sorry about that. but basically i just wanted to type up some quick tips for making the text and things always snap to the right place on your gifs! (does that make sense most of you already probably know this!!)

sometimes when you make a gifset, you want the text to appear on the same place on each respective gif. it’s really difficult to do that if you don’t know this tiny little way to get it to snap to where it should be!! if you already know how to do this don’t bother reading on omg. (i’ve noticed a lot of people have text all over the place and if you like everything you make to be neat and orderly, it might bother you to have to manually adjust it each time). but now i’m just rambling.

here we have what i’ll call the “base gif.” it holds the colouring, text, and fill layer that i want to appear the same way on all the other gifs i’m making for this set.

it’s hard to see, but you can obviously see the layers on the side. i’ve already sharpened my gif using an action (hence the effects on the gif layers, but you can completely ignore those.) what we’re focusing on are the top three layers.

when you make the next gif for the set, you just need to make it the same way you always do - just be absolutely certain that the new gif is the same size as the “base gif”!! i’ve made my base gif 245x160, so the next one will be too.

still following? awesome! it’s really so simple!!

now, what you want to do is sharpen that gif too and do whatever you usually do to your gifs

once you’re done, pull your base gif’s tab so that it’s open in a new window, like this:

now the next part is what you’re waiting for:

select all the layers you want to put on the other gif from the base gif:

and drag them over to the other gif!

now, this is the important part - drag the layers onto the grey background, not the canvas of the gif. if you drag them onto the gif’s canvas, they will land down wherever, but if you drag them onto the grey…

it goes right where you want it!

next just change the text and perhaps the colour (if that’s what you want)

and voila! your gifs all look perfectly uniform and put-together, with little hassle on your part!
